Trigonometry is the first course that asks you to hold three pictures of the same idea at once. In Trigonometry, 5th Edition the sine of an angle is a ratio in a right triangle, a coordinate on the unit circle, and a wave on a graph, and a question can be posed in any of the three. Students who memorize one representation stall the moment an exam asks them to translate between them.
Why this test bank helps
Choosing the right answer is only half the work; the other half is knowing why the distractor you nearly chose is wrong, because in trigonometry the wrong options are almost always a legitimate result of a small misstep — taking the period as b instead of 2 pi over b, forgetting the reflection carried by a negative coefficient, or losing the second solution in a quadrant. Each item here is followed by a rationale that works the key step and diagnoses every alternative.
What’s inside
- Questions arranged chapter by chapter, following the order the textbook builds the subject.
- Multiple-choice, true or false, and short computational items, including applied triangle problems.
- A worked rationale for every question, showing the identity or formula that settles it.
- Deliberate coverage of all three representations — triangle ratios, unit circle values and graph transformations.
- Digital PDF, downloadable as soon as checkout is complete.
Topics covered
- Angles and their measure — degrees, radians, coterminal angles, arc length, and linear and angular speed.
- Right-triangle trigonometry — the six ratios, solving triangles, angles of elevation and depression, and bearings.
- Circular functions — the unit circle, reference angles, exact values and periodic behavior.
- Graphs — amplitude, period, phase shift and vertical translation for sine and cosine, and graphs of tangent, secant and cosecant.
- Inverse trigonometric functions — restricted domains, principal values and composite expressions.
- Identities — Pythagorean, sum and difference, double-angle, half-angle and product-to-sum relationships, and verifying identities.
- Trigonometric equations — solutions on an interval, general solutions and equations requiring factoring or an identity.
- Oblique triangles and vectors — the Law of Sines with the ambiguous case, the Law of Cosines, area formulas, vectors, dot products, polar coordinates and De Moivre’s theorem.
Who it’s for
Students taking a standalone trigonometry course or the trigonometry half of a precalculus sequence, at high school, community college or first-year university level, and anyone rebuilding this material before calculus, physics or a technical program that depends on it.
How to use it (the right way)
Sketch before you compute. Most questions in this course become straightforward once a triangle, a unit circle or a rough graph is on the page, so make the sketch part of your answer routine. Work sets closed-book, then read the rationale for every question, including those you answered correctly by recognition rather than reasoning. This is a study aid, to be used in line with your institution’s academic-integrity policy and not as a shortcut around assigned coursework.
Sample question (shows the format — your download contains the full set)
Q. What are the amplitude and period of y = -4 cos(3x)?
- A. Amplitude -4, period 2 pi / 3
- B. Amplitude 4, period 2 pi / 3
- C. Amplitude 4, period 6 pi
- D. Amplitude 3, period 2 pi
Answer: B. Amplitude is the absolute value of the coefficient in front of the cosine, so it is 4; the negative sign reflects the graph across the horizontal axis but cannot make a distance negative, which rules out option A. Period is 2 pi divided by the absolute value of the coefficient of x, giving 2 pi over 3. Option C multiplies by 3 instead of dividing, producing a graph that is stretched rather than compressed. Option D reads the two coefficients in the wrong roles, treating the multiplier of x as the amplitude.
