Answer: B. Dilution conserves moles, so the relationship is concentration times volume before equals concentration times volume after. Rearranged, the stock volume is 0.50 M times 250 mL divided by 2.0 M, which gives 62.5 mL, made up to 250 mL with solvent. Option A comes from dividing by 4 twice, a slip when the ratio is applied to an already halved value. Option C is what you get by using a factor of 2 rather than the true fourfold ratio between the concentrations. Option D inverts the ratio and would produce a solution more concentrated than the stock, which is impossible.
