Working from a Canadian edition creates a problem nobody warns you about: your classmates quoting chapter numbers from the American printing are quoting different chapters. Campbell Biology, Second Canadian Edition reorganizes and re-illustrates enough of the text, with its own units, examples and ecological case material, that practice written for another printing lands slightly off target all term.
Why this test bank helps
Practice is only useful when it tracks the book your instructor is teaching from. Beyond that alignment, what makes questions worth doing is the explanation attached to them: seeing why water moves out of a cell in a hypertonic solution is what lets you handle the next osmosis question, whatever the wording. Every item here is explained in full.
What’s inside
- Questions ordered chapter by chapter against the Second Canadian Edition, so the sequence matches your lectures.
- A mixture of recall, applied and figure-based items covering all units of the text.
- An explanation under every question that reasons through the answer and dismantles the distractors.
- Attention to the areas first-year exams weight most: membranes and transport, respiration, photosynthesis, genetics.
- A single searchable PDF, delivered immediately after checkout.
Topics covered
- The chemical context of life: water, carbon chemistry and macromolecule structure.
- Cell structure, membrane transport, osmosis and water balance in cells.
- Energy pathways: cellular respiration, fermentation and the light and carbon reactions of photosynthesis.
- Cell communication, the cell cycle, mitosis and meiosis.
- Mendelian and molecular genetics, gene expression, and regulation of the genome.
- Evolutionary processes, population genetics, speciation and phylogeny.
- Biological diversity from prokaryotes through protists, plants, fungi and animals.
- Plant form and function and animal form and function, organ system by organ system.
- Ecology and conservation, with the ecosystem and biome examples used in this edition.
Who it’s for
First-year students at Canadian universities taking the introductory biology sequence from this edition, and anyone whose course lists the Canadian printing rather than the American one and wants practice that follows the same order.
How to use it (the right way)
Take a chapter closed-book, then check the ones you got right by guessing as carefully as the ones you missed, because a guess that lands is still a gap. Rewrite each missed item as a statement of fact in your notes; the act of rewriting fixes more than rereading does. Revisit older chapters weekly. This is a study aid to be used with your own coursework and within your university’s academic-integrity policy, not as a substitute for lectures, labs or assignments.
Sample question (shows the format — your download contains the full set)
Q. A plant cell is placed in a solution with a higher solute concentration than its cytoplasm. What happens to the cell?
- A. Water enters the cell and it becomes turgid
- B. Water leaves the cell and the membrane pulls away from the wall
- C. Solutes diffuse into the cell until concentrations equalize
- D. Nothing changes, because the cell wall prevents water movement
Answer: B. The external solution is hypertonic, so free water is lower outside relative to the cell interior only in the sense that solutes are higher; water therefore moves out across the membrane, the protoplast shrinks and pulls away from the cell wall, which is plasmolysis. Option A describes what a hypotonic solution would do. Option C assumes the membrane is freely permeable to those solutes, which is generally not the case and is why osmosis happens at all. Option D confuses mechanical support with permeability: the wall resists expansion but does not stop water from leaving.

Frequently asked questions
Is this the Canadian edition? Yes, it is matched to the Second Canadian Edition and the ISBN above. Check that against your syllabus, because the American printing is organized differently.
How do I get the file? The download is issued the moment checkout completes and the link is emailed to you as well, so nothing has to be shipped.
Do the questions include rationales? Yes. Every question is followed by an explanation of the answer and of why each of the other three options does not hold.
Is a test bank permitted for study? It is a study aid for revision and self-testing, to be used in line with your university’s academic-integrity policy. Ask your instructor if your course has its own rules.
