In chemistry the end-of-chapter problems are where the chapter is actually learned, and they are also where an evening can vanish with nothing to show for it. The problem sets in Chemistry, 8th Edition (ISBN 9780130866400) run to multi-step stoichiometry, equilibrium tables and thermodynamic cycles, and the answer printed at the back of the book delivers a single unhelpful verdict: your number is wrong. It says nothing about whether the fault was a mole ratio inverted in the first line or a sign dropped four lines further down.
Why this solution manual helps
A final answer is a verdict; a worked solution is feedback. These solutions show the route rather than the destination — the balanced equation the whole setup depends on, the conversion factor chosen and the reason for choosing it, the equilibrium expression written out before any number goes into it. Comparing your attempt line against line finds the earliest place the two diverge, and in a long calculation that first divergence is almost always the only genuine mistake. Everything after it was competent arithmetic performed on a wrong quantity.
What’s inside
- Written solutions to the textbook’s own exercises and problems, kept in the book’s chapter order.
- Step-by-step working, with the setup laid out before the arithmetic instead of a bare final value.
- Units carried through each stage, so a dimensional slip is visible at the point where it happens.
- Full reasoning for the conceptual and explanation questions, where the justification is the answer.
- One organized PDF, downloadable as soon as checkout completes.
Topics covered
- Stoichiometry problems — balancing, mole ratios, limiting reagent tests and percent yield working.
- Solution chemistry — molarity, dilution, solution stoichiometry and titration calculations.
- Gas law problems — ideal and combined gas calculations, partial pressures and gas stoichiometry.
- Thermochemistry — calorimetry arithmetic, Hess’s law cycles and enthalpies of formation.
- Equilibrium, acids and bases — ICE tables, Ka and Kb, pH and buffer problems worked in full.
- Electronic structure and bonding — configurations, Lewis structures, formal charge and geometry.
- Oxidation and reduction — assigning oxidation numbers, balancing half-reactions and cell potentials.
- Conceptual chapter questions — the items where the marks come from an explanation rather than a number.
Who it’s for
Students in a general chemistry course working from this edition who want the intermediate steps rather than a key, and anyone studying largely on their own, where a worked route through a hard problem substitutes for the tutorial hour they do not have.
How to use it (the right way)
Attempt the problem in full first, on paper, and let yourself get stuck — the stuck moment is what makes the solution memorable when you read it. Only then open the worked version, and instead of scanning for the final figure, find the first line that differs from yours and ask what you believed at that point. This is a study aid. Use it in line with your institution’s academic-integrity policy, as a way of checking and understanding your own work, never as a way to hand in solutions you did not produce.
Sample worked solution (shows the format — your download contains the full set)
Problem. What volume of 0.150 M NaOH is required to neutralize 25.0 mL of 0.200 M H2SO4?
- Step 1. Moles of acid: 0.0250 L times 0.200 mol/L gives 0.00500 mol H2SO4.
- Step 2. Sulfuric acid is diprotic, so the balanced neutralization consumes two NaOH per acid: 0.0100 mol NaOH.
- Step 3. Volume of base: 0.0100 mol divided by 0.150 mol/L gives 0.0667 L.
Answer: 66.7 mL of 0.150 M NaOH. The step that decides the problem is the second one. Treating the reaction as one-to-one, which is the habit built on monoprotic examples, halves the answer to 33.3 mL, and no amount of careful arithmetic afterwards recovers it.

Frequently asked questions
Is this the current edition? These solutions are prepared against the 8th Edition and its problem numbering. A different edition renumbers and often replaces problems, so match the edition your course listed.
How do I receive it? As a digital PDF, linked on your order confirmation page and stored in your account, available the moment checkout completes.
Do all the problems include full working? The solutions show the intermediate steps rather than final answers alone, which is the entire point of a solution manual over the answer key already printed in the book.
Is using a solution manual allowed? Used to check and understand work you have attempted, it is ordinary study practice. Follow your institution’s academic-integrity policy and do not submit these solutions as your own.
