General chemistry has a reputation as a memorization course, and that reputation is exactly what sinks people. Chemistry, 12th Edition by Chang travels from atomic structure to thermochemistry, equilibrium and electrochemistry inside a single year, and nearly every exam item is really two questions stacked together: decide which model the situation calls for, then run the arithmetic without losing a unit along the way. Students who can define enthalpy and still lose marks are usually failing at the first step rather than the second. They never practiced choosing between the tools a chapter handed them.

Why this test bank helps

Arriving at the right number proves less than it seems; a lucky rearrangement of a formula produces it with no understanding of what was conserved. Every item here is followed by a written rationale naming the principle behind the setup — why one reagent limits the reaction, why an equilibrium shifts in the direction it does, why a half-reaction has to balance the way it does. Reading those explanations turns a wrong attempt into a diagnosis rather than a discouragement, and diagnosis is the thing that changes the next paper.

What’s inside

  • Questions that follow the book chapter by chapter, so a week of reading maps onto a defined block of practice.
  • A mix of conceptual, multiple choice and numerical items, in the proportions a general chemistry paper tends to use.
  • A written rationale under every question, including the working where a calculation is involved.
  • Deliberate weight on stoichiometry, equilibrium and thermodynamics, the three areas that carry most of the marks.
  • One organized PDF, ready to download the moment checkout completes.

Topics covered

  • Atomic structure and periodicity — electron configuration, effective nuclear charge and the periodic trends built on them.
  • Stoichiometry — mole conversions, limiting reagents, percent yield and empirical versus molecular formulas.
  • Gases — the ideal gas law, partial pressures, kinetic molecular theory and departures from ideal behavior.
  • Thermochemistry — enthalpy, calorimetry, Hess’s law and standard enthalpies of formation.
  • Bonding and molecular geometry — Lewis structures, formal charge, VSEPR shapes, hybridization and polarity.
  • Equilibrium — the reaction quotient, Le Chatelier’s principle, Ka and Kb, buffers and titration curves.
  • Chemical kinetics — rate laws, integrated rate equations, half-life and activation energy.
  • Electrochemistry — balancing half-reactions, standard cell potentials, the Nernst equation and electrolysis.

Who it’s for

Students working through a two-semester general chemistry sequence from this edition — chemistry and biochemistry majors building the foundation everything later rests on, and the engineering, biology and pre-health students for whom general chemistry is a required gateway.

How to use it (the right way)

Read the chapter and work the book’s own examples before you touch a question here; practice reveals understanding, it does not create it. Then attempt a block closed-book with a calculator and no notes, flag every item you were unsure of even where the answer came out right, and read the rationale for all of them. This is a study aid. Use it in line with your institution’s academic-integrity policy — as preparation and self-testing, never as a substitute for the coursework or as material carried into a graded assessment.

Sample question (shows the format — your download contains the full set)

Q. A 0.500 mol sample of N2 is combined with 0.900 mol of H2 and allowed to react to completion by N2 + 3H2 → 2NH3. How much ammonia forms?

  • A. 0.300 mol
  • B. 0.600 mol
  • C. 1.00 mol
  • D. 0.900 mol

Answer: B. Hydrogen runs out first: 0.900 mol of H2 supports only 0.300 mol of nitrogen reacting, and the balanced equation gives two ammonia for every three hydrogen, so 0.600 mol forms. A is the nitrogen actually consumed, mistaken for product. C assumes nitrogen limits the reaction and never tests which reagent runs out. D carries the hydrogen figure straight across on an unwritten one-to-one ratio.

Frequently asked questions

Is this the current edition? This set is prepared against the 12th Edition specifically. If your syllabus names a different edition, choose that listing instead, because coverage and numbering move between revisions.

How do I receive it? The download link appears on your order confirmation page and in your account as soon as checkout completes. Nothing is shipped and there is no waiting period.

Do all the questions include rationales? Yes. Every item carries a written explanation of the reasoning, and for numerical items the working is shown rather than just the final value.

Is using a test bank allowed? As a study aid it works like any other practice resource. Follow your institution’s academic-integrity policy, and never take the material into a graded assessment.
