The fundamentals of nursing textbook your course assigns teaches the first-semester core: the nursing process, safety, assessment, basic skills and the body’s everyday needs. Potter & Perry (12th edition, 2025), Taylor (11th, 2026) and Kozier & Erb (12th, 2026) cover that core at full length with different emphases, while deWit and Timby are written for LPN/LVN students. Your syllabus picks the book; the edition decides which study aids fit.
Key takeaways
- Current editions as of October 2026: Potter & Perry 12th (Elsevier, 2025), Taylor 11th (Wolters Kluwer, 2026), Kozier & Erb 12th (Pearson, 2026), deWit 7th (Elsevier, 2024) and Timby 13th (Wolters Kluwer, 2024).
- All five teach the same core but package it differently, from 50 chapters in Potter & Perry to 38 in Timby.
- Kozier’s 12th edition rebuilt its nursing process chapters around the NCSBN Clinical Judgment Measurement Model.
- New editions renumber chapters: chapter 28 of Taylor’s 10th edition is about safety, but in the 11th it is Medications.
- deWit and Timby are written for practical nursing (LPN/LVN) students and give the nursing process three chapters and one chapter respectively.
- Our test banks currently match earlier editions, so check your ISBN before you buy anything.
What a Fundamentals of Nursing Course Covers
A fundamentals course teaches the thinking and basic care every later nursing course assumes you have. Across the five publishers’ tables of contents, the shared core is the nursing process, professional standards, safety, and physical and psychosocial care.
Expect chapters on ethics and the law, communication and documentation, infection control, vital signs and health assessment, medication administration, hygiene, mobility, nutrition, elimination, oxygenation, and fluid and electrolyte balance. All five also cover loss, grief or end-of-life care. The books differ in emphasis and order, not in the topic list.
The thread running through it all is the nursing process. The open-access Open RN Nursing Fundamentals text ties it to the American Nurses Association’s standards and uses the mnemonic ADOPIE for its six components: assessment, diagnosis, outcomes identification, planning, implementation and evaluation. It also covers the NCSBN Clinical Judgment Measurement Model, the framework the NCLEX uses to measure clinical judgment (recognize cues, analyze cues, prioritize hypotheses, generate solutions, take action, evaluate outcomes), as a complement to the nursing process. How each fundamentals of nursing textbook blends the two is one of the clearest differences between them.
Potter & Perry Fundamentals of Nursing
Potter & Perry’s Fundamentals of Nursing (Elsevier) is a large, skills-heavy RN text built on a five-step nursing process linked to clinical judgment. The current edition is the 12th, published in 2025.
Organization
The 12th edition runs 50 chapters in seven units, from nursing and health care through clinical judgment, professional standards and psychosocial care to physiologic care. Its clinical judgment unit (chapters 15 to 21) gives assessment, analysis and diagnosis, planning, implementing and evaluation a chapter each, with outcomes identification sharing the planning chapter.
Skills are its signature. Elsevier’s 12th-edition listing counts more than 50 skills in a two-column format with a rationale for each step, more than 30 procedural guidelines, and more than 20 concept maps and 20 care plans. Every chapter has five review questions, with answers in the book and rationales on the Evolve site.
Current edition
The 12th edition (ISBN 9780443124068) lists Patricia A. Potter, Anne G. Perry, Patricia A. Stockert, Amy Hall and Wendy R. Ostendorf as authors. Elsevier gives a February 2025 publication date and a 2026 copyright year, so a syllabus may cite either. The 11th edition (ISBN 9780323810340), by Potter, Perry, Stockert and Hall, came out in 2021.
To be straight with you: our Potter & Perry test banks currently go up to the 11th edition. If your course uses the 12th, they won’t line up chapter for chapter, so match your syllabus edition first and use our textbook request form if yours isn’t listed.
Taylor’s Fundamentals of Nursing
Taylor’s Fundamentals of Nursing (Wolters Kluwer), by Carol R. Taylor, Pamela Lynn and Jennifer L. Bartlett, frames the course around person-centered care. Its 11th edition was published on September 28, 2026, replacing the 10th edition from 2022.
Person-centered approach
The publisher describes the book as The Art and Science of Person-Centered Nursing Care, and it threads case narratives through the chapters to tie each topic to the person receiving care. The 10th edition added a clinical judgment chapter, evolving case studies built on NCSBN’s model and NCLEX-style review questions in every chapter. The 11th adds two-part unfolding patient stories developed with the National League for Nursing and new material on professional identity and nurse self-care.
Current edition
Wolters Kluwer lists the 11th edition (ISBN 9781975243678) at 1,936 pages and calls it intentionally streamlined. It has 45 chapters in six units, down from 47 in seven: the 10th’s three-chapter developmental unit is gone, and the 11th has one chapter on promoting health across the lifespan instead.
That reshuffle moves most later chapters. Chapter 28 covers safety, security and emergency preparedness in the 10th edition but medications in the 11th. Our Taylor test bank matches the 10th edition (ISBN 9781975168155), so it suits courses still assigning that edition, not the 11th.
Kozier & Erb’s Fundamentals of Nursing
Kozier & Erb’s Fundamentals of Nursing (Pearson), by Audrey T. Berman, Shirlee J. Snyder and Geralyn Frandsen, is a broad concepts, process and practice text. Its 12th edition, published in May 2026 with a 2027 copyright, rebuilt the nursing process chapters around the NCSBN Clinical Judgment Measurement Model.
The 11th edition (September 2020, copyright 2021) held separate chapters for assessing, diagnosing, planning, and implementing and evaluating. In the 12th edition (hardcover ISBN 9780135384312), those become a clinical judgment sequence with titles such as Forming the Client’s Care Hypothesis and Taking Action and Evaluating Outcomes, and Pearson says the end-of-chapter questions apply the model for the Next Generation NCLEX-RN.
Pearson’s catalog lists the 12th edition under the shorter title Fundamentals of Nursing: Concepts, Process and Practice, naming Kozier & Erb’s 11th as its predecessor, so search by author or ISBN. Our Kozier & Erb test bank matches the 10th edition, two editions behind, so it only fits courses that still assign the 10th.
LPN/LVN Options: deWit and Timby
Practical nursing programs may assign a fundamentals text written for the LPN/LVN role. Elsevier’s deWit and Wolters Kluwer’s Timby are two such books, with fewer nursing process chapters and more step-by-step skills than the larger texts.
deWit: Fundamental Concepts and Skills for Nursing
Elsevier lists the 7th edition (November 2024, ISBN 9780443245237) as Fundamental Concepts and Skills for Nursing by Patricia A. Williams; earlier editions carried the deWit name in the title. Elsevier names its readers as LPN/LVN students studying for the NCLEX-PN. Its 42 chapters in nine units give the nursing process three chapters and medication administration four, and more than 110 Skills and Steps use an action-and-rationale format. Our deWit test bank matches the 5th edition, two editions back.
Timby’s Fundamental Nursing Skills and Concepts
The 13th edition of Timby’s Fundamental Nursing Skills and Concepts (Wolters Kluwer, October 2024), by Loretta A. Donnelly-Moreno, presents itself as the starting point for future licensed practical nurses. At 944 pages it is about half the length of Taylor’s 11th, with 38 chapters in 11 units.
The nursing process gets one early chapter; the rest is hands-on care, from medication administration to airway management and end-of-life care. The 13th edition adds Next Generation NCLEX-style questions to clinical scenarios. Our Timby test banks match the 11th and 10th editions.
Fundamentals of Nursing Textbook Comparison: Editions, Focus and Features

How to tell which one you have
- Read the ISBN-13 on your syllabus or back cover; it pins down edition and format. Our guide on how to find the ISBN of a book shows where to look.
- Check the authors. Three of these books are titled Fundamentals of Nursing: Potter and Perry’s, Taylor, Lynn and Bartlett’s, and Berman, Snyder and Frandsen’s.
- Watch the near-twin LPN titles. deWit’s is Fundamental Concepts and Skills for Nursing; Timby’s is Fundamental Nursing Skills and Concepts.
- Compare edition numbers, not years. Potter & Perry’s 12th was released in 2025 with a 2026 copyright, and Kozier’s 12th in 2026 with a 2027 copyright.
Then check it against what we carry. Every listing in our fundamentals of nursing test banks names its edition:
| Textbook | Current edition | Our test bank |
|---|---|---|
| Potter & Perry | 12th | 11th and earlier |
| Taylor | 11th | 10th and 8th |
| Kozier & Erb | 12th | 10th and 8th |
| deWit (Williams) | 7th | 5th |
| Timby | 13th | 11th and 10th |
How to Study a Fundamentals of Nursing Textbook in Your First Semester
Read each assigned chapter in short blocks, then close the book and answer that chapter’s questions a day later. Self-testing and spacing beat rereading, and your textbook already supplies the first questions.
A 2013 review led by John Dunlosky, summarized by the Association for Psychological Science, rated practice testing and distributed practice the highest of ten study techniques, and highlighting and rereading low. Its own example of practice testing is answering the questions at the end of a textbook chapter.
Weekly chapter rhythm
If your course pairs lecture with a skills lab, link each chapter to that week’s skill. One chapter over one week can look like this:
| When | Task | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Before lecture | Skim objectives, key terms and headings | 15 min |
| Lecture day | Read in 25-minute blocks; say each skill’s steps and rationales aloud | 60 to 75 min |
| Next day | Answer the chapter questions closed-book; read every rationale | 30 min |
| Day 4 | Log each miss with the reason; reread only those sections | 20 min |
| Weekend | Mixed retest: this chapter plus one from two weeks earlier | 30 min |
For more structure, both large RN publishers sell a fundamentals of nursing study guide for their current edition: Elsevier’s Study Guide for Fundamentals of Nursing by Geralyn Ochs follows the 12th edition’s chapters, and Wolters Kluwer’s Study Guide for Taylor’s Fundamentals of Nursing pairs with the 11th. Our comparison of nursing study guides vs test banks explains how the two fit together.
Self-quizzing with chapter questions
Each book builds in questions, so start there. Potter & Perry’s 12th has five review questions per chapter, Taylor’s 10th has NCLEX-style questions in every chapter, and Kozier, deWit and Timby all include NCLEX-style review questions in their current editions.
A handful of questions per chapter runs out fast once you start retesting. An edition-matched test bank adds many more practice items per chapter, each with a rationale. It is a self-assessment study aid matched to your textbook, not a copy of your instructor’s exam, so use it for self-quizzing within your school’s academic-integrity policy. Our guide to practice testing explains how to space retests, and how to study in nursing school covers the rest of your week.
These match specific earlier editions. Use one only if the edition and ISBN on your syllabus match it.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best fundamentals of nursing textbook?
The best one is the edition your course assigns, because lectures, readings and exams follow it. If you’re choosing for extra study, match the program first: deWit or Timby if you’re in an LPN/LVN program, Potter & Perry, Taylor or Kozier & Erb otherwise. Then pick by style: Potter & Perry for illustrated skills, Taylor for person-centered cases, Kozier for the clinical judgment model.
Is Potter and Perry used in most nursing schools?
We couldn’t find published national data on fundamentals textbook adoption, so a claim that most schools use one book can’t be checked. Elsevier calls Potter & Perry a bestselling nursing textbook, but that isn’t adoption data. Taylor and Kozier & Erb cover the same core content, so any of the three could be on your syllabus. Check its ISBN-13 and authors.
What is the newest edition of Potter and Perry?
The 12th edition is the newest. Elsevier lists a February 2025 publication date, a 2026 copyright year and ISBN 9780443124068, with Potter, Perry, Stockert, Hall and Ostendorf as authors and 50 chapters in seven units. The 11th edition came out in 2021. Our Potter & Perry test banks currently stop at the 11th edition, so they won’t match a course using the 12th.
Are Taylor and Potter & Perry very different?
Not in content. Both cover the same fundamentals core and give each nursing process step its own chapter. The difference is emphasis: Potter & Perry centers on two-column illustrated skills, concept maps and care plans across 50 chapters, while Taylor’s 45-chapter 11th edition builds topics around person-centered narratives and unfolding patient stories. Their chapter numbers don’t correspond, so study aids don’t transfer between them.
Do LPN programs use a different fundamentals book?
Some do, and two publishers write fundamentals books specifically for practical nursing. deWit’s Fundamental Concepts and Skills for Nursing (Elsevier, 7th edition) targets LPN/LVN students preparing for the NCLEX-PN, and Timby’s Fundamental Nursing Skills and Concepts (Wolters Kluwer, 13th edition) is aimed at future licensed practical nurses. Your program decides, so check the syllabus.
Bottom line: start with the ISBN on your syllabus
Find the ISBN-13 on your syllabus today and match it to the authors above. If it’s a current edition (Potter & Perry 12th, Taylor 11th, Kozier 12th, deWit 7th or Timby 13th), work the book’s own chapter questions first and request a test bank by ISBN if you want more practice. If it’s an earlier edition, look for that exact edition in our nursing test banks.
