Does the program reduce reoffending, or do the people who enroll in it differ from those who do not? That question drives the design half of The Practice of Research in Criminology and Criminal Justice, 6th Edition by Ronet D. Bachman, where causal criteria, random assignment and the standing threats to internal validity are set out. Exam items in these chapters hand you a study and ask what it can and cannot support.
Why this test bank helps
A design question is answered by finding the specific weakness, not by declaring the study flawed. The explanation under each item names it: an association that fails the time-order test, a comparison group assembled after the fact, a change that maturation alone would produce, an evaluation that measured delivery rather than outcome. Reading those explanations teaches you to interrogate a design quickly, which is what both the exam and any research proposal require.
What’s inside
- Questions that follow the book chapter by chapter, so a week of reading maps to a defined block of practice.
- Mixed formats — multiple choice, true/false, matching and short written items.
- A written rationale under every question, so a wrong attempt tells you which idea you misread.
- Concentration on causal reasoning, experimental and quasi-experimental design, evaluation and qualitative methods.
- One organized PDF, ready to download the moment checkout completes.
Topics covered
- Criteria for causality — association, correct time order and the elimination of spurious explanations
- Internal and external validity — what a design can establish internally and how far the result travels
- True experiments — random assignment, control groups, pretest and posttest structures in justice research
- Quasi-experimental designs — nonequivalent comparison groups, matching and interrupted time series
- Threats to validity — selection bias, history, maturation, testing effects and regression to the mean
- Evaluation research — needs assessment, process and outcome evaluation, and cost-benefit analysis of programs
- Qualitative methods — field research, participant observation, intensive interviewing and coding of text
- Analyzing and reporting — cross-tabulation, control variables, statistical significance and writing up findings
Who it’s for
Criminology and criminal justice students in a research methods course from this edition, especially those evaluating a program or designing a study for a senior seminar or master’s project.
How to use it (the right way)
Cover the reading before you open the questions, then sit a set closed-book and time it roughly as your instructor would. Mark the items you guessed, not only the ones you missed, and read every rationale afterwards — the explanation is where the learning is. This is a study aid, and it belongs inside your institution’s academic-integrity policy, as revision rather than a shortcut around the coursework or anything carried into a graded assessment.
Sample question (shows the format — your download contains the full set)
Q. A study finds that precincts with more officers assigned report higher crime rates, and the author concludes that police presence causes crime. Which criterion for causality is most clearly unmet?
- A. Association between the variables
- B. Correct time order
- C. An adequate sample size
- D. Face validity of the crime measure
Answer: B. Departments assign officers to areas that already have high crime, so the supposed cause follows the effect rather than preceding it, and the remaining relationship is almost certainly spurious. A is satisfied: the two variables clearly covary, which is why the author noticed them. C is a matter of statistical power, not a criterion for causal inference. D concerns whether the measure looks appropriate, which is not the flaw in the reasoning here.

Frequently asked questions
Is this the current edition? This set is prepared against the 6th Edition specifically, ISBN 9781506306810. If your syllabus names a different edition, choose that listing instead, because chapter numbering shifts between editions.
When do I get the file? Right away. A download link is issued the moment checkout finishes, and it stays available in your account afterwards.
Are explanations included throughout? They are. No question is left as a bare answer key; each one is explained in writing.
Is a test bank permitted? As preparation, yes, in the same way as any practice set. It is not a substitute for the coursework, and it must not be carried into a graded assessment.
