Fundamentals is where nursing school either clicks or overwhelms you. Timby’s Fundamental Nursing Skills and Concepts asks you to hold two things at once — the concepts behind safe care (infection control, the nursing process) and the hands-on skills you’ll be checked off on in lab (vital signs, sterile technique, medication routes). Reading the chapter is one thing; answering exam-style questions about it under pressure is another. This test bank is matched to the 10th edition so your practice lines up with what your course actually assesses.
Why this test bank helps
Every question comes with an answer rationale, so you don’t just learn that an answer is correct — you learn why it’s safe and why the others are wrong or unsafe. In fundamentals, the “wrong” answers are usually the trap you’d reach for on the floor (breaking sterile field, wrong patient identifiers, skipping a step in the nursing process). Working through rationales trains the clinical-judgment reflex that carries into skills check-offs and the NCLEX.
What’s inside
- Questions organized to follow the textbook — concepts first, then assessment, then core skill sets.
- Multiple-choice, select-all-that-apply, and priority/“first action” items in the NCLEX-RN and NCLEX-PN style used in fundamentals courses.
- A written rationale for every question explaining the correct choice and the reasoning behind each distractor.
- Coverage of both the concept chapters and the step-by-step skills chapters.
- Delivered as an instant PDF you can search, print, and study offline.

Who it’s for
Written for LPN/LVN and pre-licensure ADN/BSN students working through a first-semester fundamentals course, plus anyone in a skills lab or preparing for early NCLEX-style testing on basic nursing care. It’s also useful for returning students and nurse refreshers re-drilling core concepts before clinicals.
How to use it (the right way)
Read the chapter first, attempt the matching questions closed-book, then read every rationale — including for items you got right. Keep a running list of the distractors that fooled you; those patterns repeat on real exams. Treat this as a self-assessment and study aid, not a shortcut. It is not a substitute for your textbook, lecture, or lab practice, and you should never use it to gain an unfair advantage on a graded or assessment. Used honestly, it’s a way to find your weak spots before the exam does.

Q. A nurse is preparing a sterile dressing change. After opening the sterile field and donning sterile gloves, the nurse realizes the prescribed saline is across the room. What is the most appropriate action?
- A. Reach across the sterile field to retrieve the saline quickly
- B. Remove the gloves, obtain the saline, and re-establish a new sterile field
- C. Ask a visitor in the room to hand over the saline bottle
- D. Proceed with the dressing change using the dry sterile gauze only
Answer: B. Once the nurse must leave the setup or handle a non-sterile item, the field is compromised; the safe action is to remove the gloves, gather all supplies, and start a fresh sterile field. A reaching over the field contaminates it. C brings in an untrained person and still doesn’t deliver the item sterilely. D omits a prescribed step, which is unsafe and outside the nurse’s scope to change independently.
