Nothing in the second intermediate course wastes an evening quite like a lease or pension problem that stops making sense at line four of the schedule. Intermediate Accounting, Volume 2, 11th Canadian Edition by Donald E. Kieso sets long, multi-part problems where one early figure — a present value, an opening obligation, a tax base — feeds every row after it, and the answer at the back of the book confirms only that your total is wrong. This solution manual gives the working itself: the intermediate figures, the schedule layout and the entries, so you can find the exact line where your version diverged.

Why this solution manual helps

A final number is not feedback. What you actually need is the row where your amortization table stopped agreeing, or the entry where an amount went to profit or loss instead of other comprehensive income. Each solution here is worked out in full and in order, so comparing your attempt against it isolates the step that failed rather than the total. That is also what makes the next problem faster: once you have seen how a schedule is laid out three times, you stop rebuilding the format from scratch and spend your effort on the judgment the question is really testing.

What’s inside

  • Worked solutions to the textbook’s own end-of-chapter material, following the book’s numbering.
  • Step-by-step working for computational problems, with the intermediate figures shown, not just the result.
  • Journal entries and supporting schedules laid out the way an examiner expects to see them.
  • Coverage of the long liability, lease, pension, tax and earnings per share problems that take the most time.
  • One organized PDF, available to download as soon as checkout completes.

Topics covered

  • Current liabilities and provisions — measuring obligations, warranty accruals and contingency disclosure.
  • Bonds and long-term notes — issue proceeds, effective-interest schedules and gains or losses on retirement.
  • Complex financial instruments — splitting convertible debt and accounting for warrants and options.
  • Shareholders’ equity — share issues, repurchases, dividends and the statement of changes in equity.
  • Earnings per share — weighted average shares, the if-converted method and the treasury stock method.
  • Income taxes — tax base calculations, deferred balances, rate changes and loss carryforward entries.
  • Pensions and employee benefits — obligation and plan asset continuity schedules and periodic cost components.
  • Leases — present value of the payments, the right-of-use asset, the liability schedule and lessor entries.

Who it’s for

Canadian accounting students working through the second intermediate course from Volume 2 of this edition, who are attempting the assigned problems and need to see how a full solution is constructed when their own working stalls part way through.

How to use it (the right way)

Attempt the problem yourself first and get as far as you can, even if the schedule collapses; the comparison only teaches you something if there is something to compare. Then read the worked solution line by line, find the first row that differs from yours, and rework the rest from that point without looking. This is a study aid, to be used in line with your institution’s academic-integrity policy — for checking and understanding your own work, never as something to submit as assigned coursework.

Sample worked solution (shows the format — your download contains the full set)

Problem. A lessee signs a five-year lease with payments of $50,000 due at the beginning of each year. The rate implicit in the lease is 8%. Measure the lease liability at commencement and the interest for year one.

  • Step 1 — the payments form an annuity due, so use the five-period annuity-due factor at 8%, which is 4.31213.
  • Step 2 — lease liability equals $50,000 multiplied by 4.31213, or $215,607 (rounded).
  • Step 3 — the first payment is made at commencement, reducing the liability to $165,607 before any interest accrues.
  • Step 4 — interest for year one is 8% of $165,607, or $13,249, added to the liability at year end.

Why the timing matters: using the ordinary annuity factor would overstate the liability, because every payment would be discounted for one period too many. The payment made on day one carries no interest at all, which is why the year-one charge is calculated on the reduced balance rather than the full $215,607.

Frequently asked questions

Is this the current edition? These solutions follow the 11th Canadian Edition, Volume 2. A different edition renumbers and revises the problems, so choose the listing that matches your book.

How do I receive it? The file is on your order confirmation page and in your account as soon as checkout completes. Nothing is shipped and there is no waiting period.

Do the solutions show the working? Yes. Each answer is worked step by step with the supporting schedules and entries, rather than presenting a final figure on its own.

Is using a solution manual allowed? Used to check and understand your own attempt it is a normal study practice. Follow your institution’s academic-integrity policy and never submit these solutions as your own work.
