Answer: B. Unlike most substances, water becomes less dense as it freezes, and its density peaks a few degrees above freezing; the coldest water and the ice therefore sit on top while denser water near four degrees stays at the bottom, insulating the fish below. A is factually wrong — water’s specific heat is unusually high, which is why lakes change temperature slowly. C reverses the situation: the ice layer acts as an insulator rather than as a conductor drawing heat away. D would be relevant to seawater, but a freshwater lake carries too little dissolved salt to explain the effect.
