There is a specific moment in a first accounting course when a student stops guessing and starts reasoning, and it usually arrives over a problem that will not balance. The exercises in Financial Accounting: Tools for Business Decision Making, Sixth Canadian Edition are long enough for that to matter — a bank reconciliation, a full set of adjusting entries, a statement assembled from a worksheet. The closing figure tells you whether you succeeded. It never tells you which line went wrong.

Why this solution manual helps

Worked solutions make the intermediate steps visible, and in introductory accounting the intermediate steps are the entire lesson. Each problem is developed line by line: the item identified, the side it belongs on, the account it affects and the reason. Comparing your attempt against that sequence locates the first point of divergence, and correcting the first error usually corrects everything after it, because the rest was arithmetic performed faithfully on a wrong number.

What’s inside

  • Written solutions to the exercises and problems in the sixth Canadian edition, in the book’s own order.
  • Journal entries shown with the reasoning, not only the debits and credits.
  • Full working for reconciliations, schedules and statement preparation rather than final totals.
  • Answers to the interpretation questions, where the marks come from the written justification.
  • One organized PDF, downloadable as soon as checkout completes.

Topics covered

  • Transaction analysis problems — recording entries and tracing them through to a trial balance.
  • Adjusting and closing exercises — accrual and deferral entries and the worksheet that carries them.
  • Bank reconciliation problems — reconciling both sides and preparing the entries the book side requires.
  • Inventory computations — cost formulas applied to the same data set and their effect on gross profit.
  • Receivable schedules — aging analyses, allowance adjustments, write-offs and recoveries.
  • Depreciation and disposal working — methods compared over an asset’s life, revisions, and gains or losses on disposal.
  • Statement preparation — income statement, statement of changes in equity, balance sheet and cash flows.
  • Ratio and analysis questions — computing the measures and writing the interpretation the question asks for.

Who it’s for

First-year students working the weekly problem sets from the sixth Canadian edition, especially where solutions are not released and marked feedback arrives after the following assignment is already due.

How to use it (the right way)

Attempt the entire problem before you open the solution, then compare from the top and stop at the first line that differs. Rework the rest yourself from that point rather than reading on. This is a study aid. Use it in line with your institution’s academic-integrity policy — to check and understand your own work, never to copy into a submission or as a shortcut around the coursework.

Sample worked solution (shows the format — your download contains the full set)

Problem. The bank statement shows a balance of $8,450. Deposits in transit are $1,200 and outstanding cheques total $2,050. The bank charged $40 in service fees and returned a customer cheque for $310 as unpaid. The general ledger cash balance is $7,890. Prepare the reconciliation.

  • Step 1. Start from the bank balance of $8,450 and add the $1,200 of deposits in transit, giving $9,650.
  • Step 2. Deduct the $2,050 of outstanding cheques. The adjusted bank balance is $7,600.
  • Step 3. Start from the book balance of $7,890 and deduct the $40 service charge, giving $7,850.
  • Step 4. Deduct the $310 unpaid cheque, which reinstates a receivable. The adjusted book balance is $7,600.
  • Step 5. Journalize the book-side items only: debit bank charges $40, debit accounts receivable $310, credit cash $350.

Answer: both sides reconcile to $7,600 and the entry reduces cash by $350. The rule that solves most of these problems is that only the book-side adjustments are ever recorded — deposits in transit and outstanding cheques are timing differences the bank will clear by itself, and journalizing them is the single most common error in this chapter.
