Part 1 of the management accounting syllabus behaves less like one subject than six. External reporting, planning and budgeting, performance management, cost management, internal controls, and technology and analytics each carry their own vocabulary and their own style of question. Candidates working through the CMA Part I Question Bank usually find their weak area is not the one they expected before they started, which is exactly what a large body of questions is for.
Why this question bank helps
Volume alone is not the point; the explanation attached to each item is. Answering a variance question correctly proves very little if you cannot say which input was held constant to isolate it, and that is the reasoning a written explanation supplies. Each item here states the principle being tested and why each alternative fails it, so a run of questions produces a list of concepts to revisit rather than only a score to feel encouraged or discouraged by.
What’s inside
- Questions grouped by the six Part 1 content areas rather than shuffled together.
- A written explanation under every item, naming the principle the question is testing.
- Computational questions with the working set out step by step.
- Conceptual coverage of the controls and technology areas, which carry no arithmetic but plenty of marks.
- One organized PDF, downloadable as soon as checkout completes.
Topics covered
- External financial reporting decisions — recognition, measurement, valuation and disclosure in the primary statements.
- Planning, budgeting and forecasting — the master budget, pro forma statements, regression and learning curves.
- Performance management — responsibility accounting, centre reporting and transfer pricing decisions.
- Variance analysis — flexible budget variances and the price, rate, quantity and efficiency components.
- Cost management — job order, process and activity-based costing, joint products and by-products.
- Overhead and capacity — allocation bases, absorption against variable costing and the effect on reported income.
- Internal controls — control frameworks, segregation of duties, systems controls and risk assessment.
- Technology and analytics — data governance, data quality and the analytic techniques applied to accounting data.
Who it’s for
Candidates preparing for Part 1 of the management accounting certification, and management accounting students who want a large, structured set of practice questions organized by content area.
How to use it (the right way)
Take one content area at a time and attempt a block closed-book under a rough time limit. Score the block by area rather than in total, and read every explanation — including those you answered correctly, since a right answer reached by elimination will not repeat reliably. This is a study aid, to be used in line with your program’s academic-integrity policy, as preparation for your own study rather than a substitute for it.
Sample question (shows the format — your download contains the full set)
Q. Standard usage is 3 kilograms per unit at a standard price of $5 per kilogram. The company produced 2,000 units and used 6,400 kilograms, purchased at $5.20 per kilogram. What is the materials quantity variance?
- A. $2,000 unfavourable
- B. $2,080 unfavourable
- C. $1,280 unfavourable
- D. $2,000 favourable
Answer: A. The quantity variance isolates usage, so it is valued at the standard price: 2,000 units should have consumed 6,000 kilograms, 6,400 were used, and the 400 kilogram excess at the standard $5 is $2,000 unfavourable. B values that excess at the actual price, which mixes the two variances together. C is the price variance, $0.20 above standard across all 6,400 kilograms. D has the arithmetic right and the direction wrong, since using more than standard is never favourable.
