Advanced accounting examinations rarely ask you to recite a rule. They hand you a short fact pattern and expect you to notice which of four possible treatments the facts have already selected — and the deciding fact is usually one clause long. Advanced Accounting, 13th Edition by Joe Ben Hoyle is written around the habit of asking why an entry exists rather than how to write it, so its assessment rewards students who can explain a consolidation and exposes those who can only perform one.

Why this test bank helps

This set is built to test the explanation. Each item is followed by a written rationale naming the reason behind the treatment — why an investment account falls when a dividend is received, why one transfer is eliminated in full and another only in part, why a fund uses modified accrual — so working through it trains the reasoning the paper is marking. Comparing a letter against a key builds none of that, however many questions you get through.

What’s inside

  • Questions arranged chapter by chapter across the thirteenth edition, in the book’s own order.
  • Multiple choice, true/false and short computational items in a typical paper’s proportions.
  • A written rationale under every question, naming the reason behind the treatment.
  • Coverage of the governmental and not-for-profit half as well as the consolidation chapters.
  • One organized PDF, available the moment checkout completes.

Topics covered

  • The equity method — income accrual, dividends, excess amortization, and when the method applies at all.
  • Consolidations — acquisition-date allocation and the worksheet entries required in every later year.
  • Intercompany transfers — inventory, land and depreciable assets, in both the upstream and downstream directions.
  • Variable interest entities — power over key activities and exposure to losses as the test for consolidation.
  • Foreign currency and hedging — transaction exposure, forward contracts and translating a subsidiary’s statements.
  • Partnerships — capital accounts, admission and withdrawal, and liquidation with safe payment schedules.
  • State and local government accounting — fund types, modified accrual and the government-wide conversion.
  • Not-for-profit, estates and trusts — contribution recognition, net asset classes and fiduciary reporting.

Who it’s for

Undergraduate and master’s accounting students taking advanced accounting from the thirteenth edition, and candidates revising consolidation, governmental and not-for-profit topics after finishing the unit.

How to use it (the right way)

Read first, then test. Work a block closed-book, and for every item you get wrong, write the correct rule in your own words before moving on — the rewriting is what makes it stick. Revisit the same block a week later rather than the next day. This is a study aid, to be used in line with your institution’s academic-integrity policy: preparation and self-testing, never a substitute for the coursework and never taken into an assessment.

Sample question (shows the format — your download contains the full set)

Q. An investor acquires 30 percent of an investee for $400,000 when the investee’s book value is $1,200,000. The entire difference relates to a patent with a ten-year life. The investee earns $150,000 and pays $50,000 in dividends. What equity income does the investor report?

  • A. $45,000
  • B. $41,000
  • C. $30,000
  • D. $15,000

Answer: B. The investor’s share of book value is $360,000, so $40,000 of the price is attributed to the patent and amortized at $4,000 a year. Equity income is 30 percent of $150,000, or $45,000, less that $4,000, giving $41,000. A omits the amortization. C subtracts the $15,000 of dividends from income, when dividends reduce the investment account rather than equity income. D reports the dividend itself as income, which is the fair value approach, not the equity method.
