Most students can define an unrealized intercompany profit. Far fewer can take one back out of a consolidated income statement and then split what remains between the controlling and non-controlling interests without losing track of which year the profit belonged to. The problem material in Advanced Accounting, 11th Edition by Beams leans hard on that skill, running the same group through downstream sales, upstream sales, transferred equipment and intercompany bonds until the mechanics either become automatic or fall apart.

Why this solution manual helps

A final consolidated figure is a poor teacher. These solutions show the sequence the text itself uses — the parent-company entries, then the working paper eliminations, then the non-controlling interest computation — so you can see which stage of your own attempt broke. Most consolidation errors are not conceptual at all; they are a profit deferred in the wrong direction or a gain recognized a year early, and both become obvious the moment the intermediate lines sit side by side.

What’s inside

  • Worked answers to the exercises, problems and objective items in the eleventh edition’s chapter order.
  • Working paper eliminations presented entry by entry, with each amount traced back to its source.
  • Separate schedules for non-controlling interest and for profit deferrals and their later realization.
  • Written reasoning for the theory questions, not only for the computational problems.
  • One organized PDF, ready to download the moment checkout completes.

Topics covered

  • Business combinations — the acquisition method, measuring consideration transferred, and goodwill or a bargain purchase.
  • Stock investments and the equity method — the one-line consolidation and why parent income equals consolidated income.
  • Working paper technique — the trial balance format this text uses and the order eliminations are entered.
  • Intercompany profit in inventory — downstream and upstream transfers, deferral in the year of transfer and realization in the next.
  • Intercompany plant assets — gains on transferred equipment and their piecemeal recognition through depreciation.
  • Intercompany bonds — constructive retirement, the gain or loss it creates, and how that amount is allocated.
  • Changes in ownership interest — mid-year acquisitions, additional purchases, partial disposals and indirect holdings.
  • Consolidated cash flows and EPS — preparing the group statement and computing earnings per share with a subsidiary present.

Who it’s for

Third- and fourth-year accounting students taking advanced financial accounting from the eleventh edition, especially where weekly work is long working-paper problems and marked feedback arrives after the next set is already due.

How to use it (the right way)

Work the whole problem first, on paper, then compare the working paper line by line instead of checking the consolidated totals. Find the earliest entry that differs, redo the rest yourself from that point, and note whether the mistake was a rule or a direction. This is a study aid, to be used in line with your institution’s academic-integrity policy — for checking and understanding your own attempts, never to be copied into submitted work.

Sample worked solution (shows the format — your download contains the full set)

Problem. A parent sells inventory costing $60,000 to its 80 percent-owned subsidiary for $100,000. At year end the subsidiary still holds one quarter of those goods. The subsidiary reports income of $150,000. Compute the profit to be deferred and the non-controlling interest share of income.

  • Step 1. Gross profit on the transfer is $100,000 less $60,000, or $40,000 — a 40 percent margin.
  • Step 2. One quarter of the goods remain, so $10,000 of that profit is unrealized and is deferred out of consolidated income.
  • Step 3. The transfer was downstream, so the whole deferral belongs to the parent and the subsidiary’s reported income is untouched.
  • Step 4. Non-controlling interest income is 20 percent of the subsidiary’s $150,000, or $30,000.

Answer: defer $10,000 of profit and report $30,000 of non-controlling interest income. The direction of the transfer is the whole question. Had the subsidiary sold to the parent instead, the $10,000 deferral would have reduced the subsidiary’s income to $140,000 and the non-controlling interest share would have fallen to $28,000 — same facts, different owner of the deferred profit.
