A typical nonfiction page opens with a short passage of a few paragraphs about a familiar topic, followed by four or five questions beneath it. The first asks what the passage is mostly about; the next two are literal recall that can be pointed to on the page; then comes an inference question that requires putting two sentences together; and the last gives ruled lines for the child to write a sentence using evidence from the text. The matching key gives an acceptable answer for each, including a model sentence for the written response so that marking stays consistent between adults.
